How to Tell if a Rock Chip Can Be Repaired in BC

Living in British Columbia means you’re no stranger to gravel roads, changing weather, and flying debris. Even the most careful driver can end up with a rock chip on their windshield. The good news is that many rock chips can be repaired quickly and affordably—but not every chip is a candidate for repair. Here’s how to tell whether your windshield can be fixed or if it’s time for a full replacement.

1. Size Matters

ICBC guidelines and most professional auto glass shops in BC can repair chips that are about the size of a loonie (1 inch or 25 mm) or smaller.

  • Repairable: small star breaks, bullseyes, or surface chips under 1 inch.

  • Replace: cracks or chips larger than a loonie, or a crack that’s spreading.

2. Location on the Windshield

Where the chip sits is just as important as how big it is.

  • Good candidates: Chips that are well away from the driver’s line of sight and at least a few centimetres from the windshield’s edges.

  • Replacement recommended: Chips or cracks that reach the edge of the glass or sit directly in front of the driver can weaken the windshield or create visual distortion even after repair.

3. Type of Damage

Not all chips are created equal.

  • Repairable: Round “bullseye,” small “star” or “combination” chips that haven’t splintered.

  • Not repairable: Long cracks (more than 6 inches), chips with multiple legs, or damage that penetrates the inner glass layer.

4. Cleanliness and Age of the Chip

The sooner you act, the better. Dirt and moisture can seep into a chip, making it harder for resin to bond.

  • Best chance for repair: Chips treated within a few days.

  • Harder to repair: Chips left untreated for weeks or months, especially if they’ve collected debris or moisture.

5. ICBC Coverage in BC

If you have comprehensive insurance with ICBC, rock chip repairs are usually free of charge—no deductible and no impact to your premium. That’s a big reason to get it checked as soon as you notice the damage.

6. Get a Professional Opinion

Even if your chip seems small, it’s best to have a certified auto glass technician inspect it. They can quickly determine whether a repair is safe or if replacement is the only option.

Bottom line:
A small rock chip can often be repaired if it’s smaller than a loonie, away from the edges and driver’s view, and caught early. Acting quickly not only keeps you safe but can also save you the cost of a full windshield replacement.
